DV8 Post-O-Level BBQ! - Yu Ting

i still remember sitting in the hall, watching as the seconds ticked away on the wall clock, waiting for the invigilator to go, “time’s up!” the inexplicable joy that will fill your heart, the need to jump up and down and start dancing around the school hall. this probably sums up the feeling of many of the people in D8 on Wednesday. having been there, done that, the rest of us decided to share their joy in a D8 BBQ!

the whole night was just a whirlwind, even when i try to recall it now, I can only remember trays and trays of awesome food such as chicken wings, salmon and stingray! bryan ignited the “lame games” series when he started throwing the satay sticks around and getting people to guess what’s the number it represents. that definitely got the crowd started on all the illogical, retarded and brainless games - coffee or tea, is that a string?, how many meh mehs? and where to go next? everyone who knew the secret behind these games had so much fun going on and on while we threw those who didn’t know into a state of deep confusion.

it was fun simply hanging out and celebrating the end of O Levels with the O Level students. many new friendships were being forged that night as well. one lesson learnt: never judge a book by its cover! i used to think yang zhan was a serious person until I saw him at the BBQ, similarly with the seemingly quiet bryan! michelle’s another one, super quiet and shy but she appears to be rather chatty after all!

in the midst of our busy schedules, it’s nice to simply hang out just like that.

(Note: There’ll be more edits to include all our crazy photos taken that day! Do look out for that!!)

DV8 Post-O-Level BBQ! - Benedict

11 Nov 09 marked the end of O Levels for many of the people in D8, and as a form of celebration, we decided to have a BBQ that night! It was something many of us have not done in a long time, and therefore many of us were super excited about it!

It all started at around 4.30pm, when Shuyi, Bryan, Chiu Wen, Joseph, Richard and Wess met at Kembangan to buy the goodies for the BBQ.. Bryan was the strong man! He was carrying this huge styrofoam box which might deceive you into thinking that it’s actually quite light, but in fact, inside the box were things like one whole pack of ice, and also all the uncooked meat and everything! You just gotta see how much stuff was inside man!

After that they went down to Aljunied station, where they met me at the platform. On the way while walking down to the condo, they met Yang Zhan! You got to see his shirt that day man! The shirt’s design was to make it look “dirty”, as though some charcoal or something had brushed against it! In the end, so many of us just joked with him, saying “Whoa, haven’t start BBQ, your shirt so dirty already?!”

So we made our merry way down to the BBQ pits in the condo, and whoa, that place was nice! The area was meant for two groups of BBQ simultaneously, but we were the only ones there, so we had a lot of space!! We just sat there and chatted first, joking around and everything, while some of us were figuring out how to start the BBQ without the tray at the bottom for the charcoal. Finally, we managed to get everything in place (thanks to the person-in-charge!), and by that time, Si Hui and MIchelle had joined us, so we began to start eating the DELICIOUS pineapple rice and SUMPTUOUS noodles, and also began to start the BBQ fire!

Did I mention how great the food was?! When we first started the bbq, we didn’t have margarine and the fire wasn’t really good, so we could only make some easy-to-cook food, like sausages. I made the mistake of putting stingray on the fire too! But the fire was really too small and weak to make any impact on the stingray, and we just left it there to slooooooooowly cook ): It wasn’t until Darryl came with the margarine and Cavin came to make the fire huge did we manage to really cook the food! From then on, it was a road of no return!! We had stingray, satay, chicken wings, and salmon, but if you think that’s not a lot of food, you are definitely wrong! There was simply so much food, and it all tasted very nice!!

As the BBQ went on, more and more people joined us, people like Cheong Jing (who also finished her O Levels that day!), Wan Chin (who came down after her work), Lennon (who is Deng Yao’s friend from JC and army), and Raymond (who rushed all the way down even though it was quite late just to hang out with us)! I think around 20 people came for the BBQ in all! And you’ve got to clap for Si Hui, the number of times she went to fetch people or to open the gate for people to come to the pit!

We had a fun time after that just chatting, hanging out with one another and also playing lame orientation games! We were all just making fun of each other, especially if we knew how to play the game! We just kept repeating how to play the game, trying to confuse everyone who didn’t know how to, just for the fun of it! But in the end, we taught them how to play the games, and we all had a good laugh!

At the end of the BBQ, we managed to finish almost EVERYTHING, and what was left, we passed to the security guards as supper, to thank them for kindly lending us their lighters to start the fire! They looked quite shocked that night! Oh, and I must tell you how we cleared away the charcoal! Apparently we had to clear away the charcoal, but it was just simply too hot, especially since we just killed the fire not long ago. So Deng Yao and me started to get water from the tap and to pour it on the charcoal! It was so funny, cos the charcoal just sizzled and sizzled and sizzled, and in the end there was so much water on the charcoal tray! Then we began to use some cardboard and plastic trays to scoop up the charcoal and to throw it away! Oh, and someone (ahem) accidentally threw away Deng Yao’s MC and medicine! In the end he had to dig it out from the luckily-not-very-deep-and-gross rubbish bin! ):

All in all, it was a really great BBQ! I’m sure all of us had great fun and really enjoyed just spending time with each other, just to hang out and celebrate the end of the O Levels for all the Sec 4/5 people! We do life together man! (:

Update for PJ Party

Prawning Outing 1 - Thoughts from Da Wei

We just ended our very first prawning competition at Bishan organized by Sheen An and Henry. When we arrived at the prawning area, we spilt ourselves into groups of 4 and were told the rules and regulations of the competition which allows us to stand a chance to win Sakae Sushi vouchers!

When we took up our positions and rod to prawn, everyone seems like they know what they are doing and prawning like the pros around the pond really blending in with the rest. However it was very much revealed when we started shifting and changing our position over and over again. How the rods are supposed to be held, what are the signs of the prawns eating the bait are some of the many discussion points raised up throughout the whole session. There seems to be 101 ways and suggestions to prawning. As 4 persons were sharing one rod, we all tried and experiment the many different ways that we thought would increase our probability of getting a caught. It is like a new sport to many of us.

The intensity of the competition is high. Every team was determined to at least get 1 catch at the end of the end. It really takes a lot of patience for prawning. You have to focus on the float and the feel of the rod which will indicted whether a prawn got the bait. The intense focus of the rod bearer increases the seriousness of the situation at hand. It is not merely whether you are lucky or not, it really depends a lot on your skill level, which at that point of time we all seem to have neither.

It can be frustrating at times especially when you can feel the prawning nibbling on your bait, you feel excited and instead of holding that position and getting the prawning hooked, you tend to pull up too quickly and up comes the hook with bait but no prawn! So you tell yourself that its alright and you try again. That’s the whole spirit of prawning, you never really give up because you will always feel that you can do better. It difficult especially when everyone else around you seems to be prawning at ease, the prawns coming out the water consistently while you have yet to catch any.

Many kodex and funny moments occurred, such as the rod being pulled too fast and hard that it got stuck onto the straw roof that was above us, the anticipation of almost getting our first catch and the spies trying to obtain the status of the other teams.

At the end of the 2 hour competition, we concluded that we really need more practices and skill for prawning. Following the announcement of the winning team where William himself caught the most number of prawns for his team, we ate our very expensive grilled prawns. Teams were all rewarded with Sakae Sushi vouchers for all the effort they put in for the competition.

We went to The Roti Prata House at Thomson Road for supper with the much needed help from Shan Yong who drove all of us there. It was funnier when we were mostly zoned out when the person was explaining how much everything cost because all we see on the slip of paper was numbers, we needed detailed details to what the numbers meant.

After the Prata, that wasn’t the end of it! Some of us continued the night with lanning, Left 4 Dead, which by then, almost knocked ourselves out. It really was a fun and awesome night out which has definitely left a deep impression on al of us. Prawning is something which you cannot seem to get enough of it.
